Unique Features: The Newport Plum is the most widely used cultivar of the purple leafed cherry plums. It grows moderately into a small, rounded shape. The early spring white flowers have dark red-purple anthers, so the flowers show pink from a distance which contrasts nicely with the dark purple leaves. The leaves start emerging at the same time as the blooms, enhancing the pinkish coloration. Our late spring frosts can preclude most fruit production, but the Newport can produce 1” edible fruit.
